I always remember several people. My Uncle Jules served in the South Pacific during World War II. He came home sound in body and soul – a very proud (immigrant) American. My Uncle George served in North Africa and Italy; he too came home sound in body – but emotionally destroyed. Fast forward to Vietnam: I remember Dave and Joe – college friends. These are special people who have my highest admiration.
With all Americans I salute our veterans of all wars and am thankful for their service to our country – especially those who never made it home. As a Christian, I pray for the day that war will no longer be a necessary option for humankind, but that we will follow the suggestion of the prophet Micah: that we will forge “our swords into ploughshares and spears into pruning hooks – and nation shall not make war against nation anymore.” We live in that hope even as we are grateful to those who served their country!
