On Sunday we hear of God’s calling to the young child, Samuel, who was placed with an old priest named Eli. Things are not well in those days: on the one hand, there had not been a word from the Lord for many years. However, the text reminds us that the “light of the Lord had not yet gone out.” Samuel was born for a time like this. I wonder: how do you think about your life? Were you born in a natural process to lead a life of chance, luck, and otherwise non-connected events? I would like to think that we are more like Samuel than not; we Presbyterians hold dearly the doctrine of Divine Election: that is, we are Elect (chosen) by God from before the foundations of the earth both to Salvation and Service. I suppose the more appropriate question is: How are you serving God? Something to think about.
