If you had to summarize everything that Jesus taught – and expected – of his followers it would come down to two things: The Great Commandment: loving God and neighbor with ALL your heart, soul, mind, and strength – AND The Great Commission. This one came about as the risen Jesus left his disciples. Here is what he said: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Each of us is called, with our faith community, to go, teach, preach, and make disciples. Please note that there is a promise at the end: Jesus will be with us always (if we carry out his commands). If you are not feeling especially close to Jesus today you might ask yourself about that.
