I can point to five men who mentored me: two of them taught me how to live as a joyful, winsome Christian and three of them taught me how to be a pastor and a preacher. I will never forget these men – and I will always be thankful. Over the years I have carried on this kind of ministry with young men – and not a few women. Every now and then I hear from them and I am blessed. Currently I am mentoring a young man (a fifth grader) every Thursday afternoon. Mostly, we just hang out as part of the Afterschool Program of the Boys and Girls Club of Greene County. We never know exactly what we are going to do – but it always means something. And it will mean something in both our lives forever.
I am just following Jesus’ lead – he exercised a profound ministry of “hanging out” with people – and He transformed them.
