We Presbyterians are heirs of the Swiss Reformation that was lawyer John Calvin’s response to the earthshaking work of Martin Luther. Luther had issues with the Roman church but had no desire to leave the Church. He left the Church because he was excommunicated for impertinence and heresy. Calvin, on the other hand, understood the Reformation as a complete makeover of the Church that included both renovated doctrine and governance. As far as doctrine is concerned Calvin identified the list of “essentials,” and as far as governance goes Calvin did not trust popes and bishops, nor did he trust the masses in Congregational churches. Instead Calvin suggested that the people elect presbyters (elders and ministers) to work in graduated councils to discern God’s will and carry it out. I for one am proud to be a Presbyterian!
