On Sunday we will celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. This is the day that we remember the visit of the Wise Men who came from what is today the land of Iran to worship the baby Jesus. The story is full of political intrigue, mass brutality toward the infant children of Jesus – and, most importantly, the gifts that the Magi brought to the stable. Matthew took his lead from Isaiah 60 where he found these gifts. Gold is a substance of great value that forms the bedrock of the King’s treasury; frankincense is used in the worship of God; and myrrh is an oil used for embalming. Yes, the Magi are missionaries – telling the story of Jesus in their gifts and leading others to visit him as well. A happy and fruitful Epiphany to all!
