Each year people like to talk about what they are going to give up for Lent. I have even heard people who are not believers talk like this. As a boy I used to try “brussels sprouts” and other unpleasant vegetables on my mother – to no avail! As I have grown older I have begun to see the point of Lenten sacrifice. It isn’t just that we stop doing something that we might normally like to do, it is that we engage in specific spiritual practices. Some people go without lunch every day and save the money for a special offering. Some people, if they are in the habit, forgo their weekly dinner and a movie; that can run into real money. The point, however, is not what you give up but what you give God.
