The resurrection story according to St. John begins in the dark. Mary went to the tomb of Jesus before the sun was up, not knowing exactly why he was there – fearing the worst once she got there. She was probably a bit beside herself when she moaned that someone had taken the body of her Lord. As the sun came up Peter and John scurried in and out of the tomb and confirmed that Jesus was gone. Mary stayed behind and engaged Jesus in one of the most sublime moments in the New Testament. Despite all her fears and disappointments, it was the spoken word of Jesus – speaking her name – that brought her home. During this Easter season I hope you hear Jesus speaking your name – and that you will respond warmly. He is risen!
