An Astonishing Experiment In Liberty

This week we celebrate the 237th birthday of the United States of America. Although we fought a war of independence from England our nation was not forged by military means. After the Revolution the first and second Continental Congresses gathered in Philadelphia for study, prayer, and debate over what kind of government this new land should have. Would we be a pure democracy – ruled by the masses? Would we create another monarchy? No, in the end we took the “third way” – essentially a Presbyterian form of government in which wise, trusted people would be elected to act for the larger population, regulated by an ingenious Constitution that preserved the rights of humankind. I hope you will do what Scripture says – and pray for those in authority over you every day.
