When I was a Presbytery Executive I was often called upon to give a charge to ministers or, sometimes, candidates for the ministry. There is so much that could be said at times like this and it is tempting for the older minister to wax eloquent on the glories of pastoral ministry and the “paragraphs of wisdom” that I have accumulated over the span of more than 40 years. Several years ago I came across a wonderful little verse in the fourth chapter of Proverbs: “Keep watch over your heart with all diligence for from it flow all the issues of life.” In the Hebrew Scriptures the heart is the seat of knowledge, emotion, decision-making, and our capacity for God. To take care of the heart is the primary work of the minister – and of all believers, for that matter. In an age of aerobics and healthy living. Think about what that means for your spiritual life!
