This week the Christian church begins its holiest season of the year. I realized that this season coincides with major golf tournaments – including the holiest golf tournament of all – The Masters. Lent, however, is a far cry from million-dollar endorsements and international fame. If anything it is the direct opposite. Lent is a time of self-denial and self-discovery through personal sacrifice. Beginning with Ash Wednesday we identify ourselves as dust and ashes – worthy of nothing. On Sundays we will read the familiar gospel lessons of Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem and, eventually, to the cross. Enjoy the golf – but remember, human adulation is leading. Follow Jesus – and you will live forever!
