If you have ever been to a football game – or even seen one on television – you have seen someone holding a card in the grandstand that says “John 3:16.” The ubiquity of this sign has an interesting history that I will not go into here but I will say that everybody knows what it means: “For God so loved the world that He gave his only son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but will have eternal life.” Last Sunday we read that verse in its context – Nicodemus, one of the great teachers of Israel was also a seeker of God. He didn’t know exactly what to do with Jesus but he was very interested in him. After a discussion about being born from above – by the Spirit – Nicodemus went off perplexed and still questioning. Thankfully, he shows up later in John’s gospel as a quiet believer – in the end bringing spices to anoint the [dead] body of Jesus. Remember Nicodemus!
