Last Sunday one of our reading was from the last part of the second chapter of the Book of Acts. That’s the part where the young church begins settling in to a new life after the miracle of Pentecost. The text says that they read the Apostle’s teaching, enjoyed Christian Fellowship (that is they were one in mission), they nurtured one another in the faith, and they performed acts of compassion and mercy. This was definitely a community that upheld the poor and the weak. I must say that there was never any attack on the rich or wealthy – however, as new members joined the movement without being coerced day empty themselves and shared everything they had with those in need. It is a shame that this practice has not endured. May be we need to recover this attitude!
