It’s hard to believe but this week marks the beginning of school for hundreds of children and young people in Greene County. For many of these children it is the beginning of another year of enrichment, family support, and even fun. For others, I am afraid, it will be another year of drudgery and painful failure due to a variety of circumstances. I am thankful to be part of a growing cadre of men and women who give their time to make sure that these kids on the fringes have a chance to succeed. I love volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club where I serve as a story teller and reader. This is something I do especially well and I always hope that my enthusiasm will be transferred to the children. Sometimes I see it – and it makes me glad. If you have a passion for children and specific educational gifts – find ways to be a volunteer. The rewards are limitless!
