Theology for Church Officers

Joining a congregation of the Presbyterian Church USA is relatively simple: you must affirm your belief in Jesus Christ as Lord, Savior, and your willingness to live for Him. Being an officer in the church is another matter altogether.

Saturday I am teaching a workshop in Athens for the Annual Winter Leadership Event of Northeast Georgia Presbytery. The name of the workshop is, The Book of Confessions: Theology for Church Officers. We are unique in that all our leadership is ordained leadership. That is, the church is governed by Ruling Elders and Teaching Elders (ministers) who are expected to be theologically astute in the “essential tenets of the Reformed Tradition” found in the Book of Confessions. I don’t have time to go into the whole content of the Confessions but it is not to say that these 10 historical documents give an eloquent and compelling picture of what it means to follow Jesus Christ as a Presbyterian. I can’t tell you how proud I am to be steeped in this tradition and invite you to join me!
