Where the Wild Things Are 

There is a wonderful children’s story by Richard Scary, Where the Wild Things Are and relates how a young boy is sent to his room without supper for his wild antics. He is then transported into a place of terrible monsters wherein he becomes the greatest monster of all – the King of the Wild Things. In the end he finds himself back home – and his dinner is still warm. He is repentant. Next week we begin the season of Lent in which Jesus finds himself “where the wild things are.” By this I mean the Spirit drove him into the wilderness where he was tempted by the Devil. In Mark’s gospel this comes immediately following His Baptism and before He began his ministry in Galilee. The Devil tried everything he knew to tempt the Son of God to leave His God-appointed mission and become Somebody – power, fame, and the rest! No way! Jesus sent the Devil packing – and Jesus went to work. However, the Devil was not finished with him…
